Test Includes

Identification of routine bacteria to genus or species level. For identification of Corynebacterium, Bacillus sp (other than cereus), and atypical isolates, please order the Reference Bacterial Culture Identification [008458].

Label sample. Include any special identification instructions. Note: Identification of atypical organisms may require an additional charge (see Reference Bacterial Culture Identification [008458]).

Expected Turnaround Time

3 - 12 days

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Specimen

Pure isolate of aerobic or facultatively anaerobic organisms; identification of multiple organisms will result in an additional fee(s).

Volume

Viable colonies

Container

A swab transport inoculated with the isolate from a pure culture or agar slant in screw-cap container packed as an etiologic agent. Maintain a subculture at the submitting laboratory.

Collection

Bacterium derived from cultured clinical sample. Send pure culture on maintenance media. Maintain subculture at submitting laboratory.

Storage Instructions

Maintain specimen at room temperature.

Causes for Rejection

Broken tube; improper labeling; mixed culture

Limitations

This test is for the identification of “routine” bacteria; those found to require extensive biochemical testing require Reference Bacterial Culture Identification [008458], at an additional charge.
