Expected Turnaround Time

3 - 9 days

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen

Serum and plasma, frozen

Volume

Three 2 mL each frozen citrated plasma tubes and one 1 mL tube frozen serum

Container

Blue-top (sodium citrate) tubes and red-top tube or gel-barrier tube

Collection

Serum/plasma must be separated from cells within 45 minutes of venipuncture. Send serum/plasma in plastic transport tubes. To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.

Storage Instructions

Freeze.

Causes for Rejection

Wrong sample type; fibrin clot in plasma sample

Test Details

Use

Determine the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies, using either clot-based or ELISA technology, that may be associated with an increased risk for arterial or venous thrombosis or obstetric complications. These antibodies may also be the cause of an elevated activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT).
