Effects of acetone or ethanol in rats following subchronic snout-only inhalation exposure

March 10, 2024

SOT 2024 -- Acetone and ethanol are widely used in industrial processes and are found in common household products. In inhalation studies, these organic molecules are used as solvents to vaporize low-volatility chemicals to reach the target aerosol concentrations. Due to high volatility of acetone and ethanol, prolonged inhalation exposure to their vapors could produce injury in different organs. The purpose of this investigation was to assess toxicity of acetone and ethanol in rats following 28- or 90-day repeated inhalation exposures based on the OECD 412 or 413 guidelines.
