A global approach to determine hazardous physical properties

March 14, 2023
IUPAC 2023 -- Globally recognised European Commission (EC) methods are used for hazardous testing. However, as part of the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) regulations for the transporting of materials, the required testing follows the UN testing regulations. These two testing guidelines differ in that the United Nations (UN) regulations not only give you a positive or negative result of the endpoint, they also give the degree of severity of a given endpoint. Globally, the testing requirements refer to EC testing, as the UN methods are not well known or accepted. Testing by these guidelines alone could result in data gaps in Europe where positive results are observed. These data gaps will result in repeat tests and additional testing, additional cost and additional time taken. CLP also have additional endpoints not needed in countries outside of Europe such as corrosion to metals. Global transportation of the product requires you to use the UN method to CLP regulations.
