Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.
Urine (male only)
10 mL
2 mL
Sterile urine cup or BD urine transport tube
Immediately after ejaculation, patient should cleanse the penis with water to remove residual semen. Patient should collect urine in clean plastic or glass jar. Care must be taken to include the entire specimen.
Refrigerate
Specimen more than 48 hours old when unpreserved/refrigerated or more than 72 hours old for BD transport tube; female specimen; samples tested on the IRIS prior to analysis
Diagnosis is based on the absence of sperm in the antegrade ejaculate and the presence of sperm in postmasturbatory urine. Retrograde ejaculation may be suspected whenever the semen volume is less than 1 mL. To diagnose retrograde ejaculation, it is necessary to evaluate urine after an ejaculation.
This test was developed, and its performance characteristics determined, by LabCorp. It has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Visual and microscopic
In males, retrograde ejaculation occurs when the ejaculated fluid, which would normally exit via the urethra, is redirected towards the urinary bladder. Normally, the bladder sphincter contracts and the ejaculate fluid passes through the urethra towards the area of least pressure. In retrograde ejaculation, this sphincter does not function properly. Retrograde ejaculation has multiple causes, including surgical (transurethral resection of the prostate), medication (eg, tamsulosin), complications of diabetes, and in male infertility.
