Calcofluor preparation and culture for fungus; identification (additional charges/CPT code[s] may apply) if culture results warrant. Before results are reported, cultures are held for one to four weeks, based on specimen source: results on sterile body fluids and blood are reported in four weeks; results on hair, skin, and nails are reported in three weeks; results on urine and genital specimens are reported in one week. CPT coding for microbiology and virology procedures often cannot be determined before the culture is performed.
30 - 42 days
Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.
Aspirate, biopsy, body fluid, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), nails, hair, skin, sinus, sputum, stool, urine, or genital
2 mL or 1 cc tissue; whole nails or scrapings, hairs, skin scrapings; 50 mL body fluid; 5 mL aspirates
Sterile screw-capped container for fluid or tissue, bacterial swab transports (two swabs: one for culture, one for stain), ESwab®
Refrigerate respiratory specimens that are contaminated with oropharyngeal flora; other specimens should be at room temperature.
Fungal stain (KOH/Calcofluor) cannot be performed on blood; unlabeled specimen or name discrepancy between specimen and request label; specimen submitted in syringe with needle attached; inappropriate transport device; swab without evidence of specimen present; specimen received after prolonged transport (usually more than 72 hours); specimens received after leaking transport container into specimen bag. Trach-suction devices will often leak if the cap with tubing is not removed and replaced by a solid cap. This may need to be done by personnel collecting the specimen as the solid cap is usually in with the device. If there is not solid cap, the specimen should be transferred to a leakproof sterile cup with metal cap.
This test is used to aid in the establishment of the diagnosis of fungal infection.
This test should not be the sole criterion used to establish diagnosis in case of infection.
